THE ARTIST

URSULA JORCH

My work uses landscape and architecture to explore the two seemingly contradictory ideas of universality and a sense of place. The relationship between strong design elements and the sensation of texture is particularly important to me. Abstracted images are taken out of their larger context of place, and become ambiguous and charged with universal meaning in their abstraction. My latest series, shown in the "Woodland Reverie" and "Beach Reverie" portfolios, in particular expresses "place" in terms of dreams and reality. The subjectivity of reality is highlighted by the exploration of the fluid boundary between dreams and reality. I encourage you to attach your own history and meaning in order to "place" the images in your own psychic world. At any given moment, where do your perceptions lie on the dream-reality continuum?

Biography

After a long career as a scientist, my work has taken a more creative turn. My long-standing interest in photography has become a focus in my professional life. In following this path, I have taken the opportunity to study with several respected teachers, primarily in workshop settings. My work has been shown in numerous public group exhibitions in both Canada and the US, and is in private collections in Canada, the US, and the Middle East.
